"Śāriputra, when people go forth from the household to study the Path with faculties such as pure faith, they may encounter bad friends (pāpamitra). A bad friend is always fond of frivolity, is flighty and shameless, speaks in a scattered manner, does not restrain the senses, has an unfocused mind, and is foolish as a white sheep. One who associates with such a bad friend loses the fruit of a srotāpanna, the fruit of a sakṛdāgāmin, the fruit of an anāgāmin, and the fruit of an arhat, and even loses the bliss of being born in heaven, let alone the path of nirvāṇa. Śāriputra, such a person follows a bad friend: if born among humans, they will suffer separation from parents by death and loss, decay and distress among relatives, and the ruin of their country; they will be born into the eight difficulties (aṣṭāv akṣaṇāḥ) and abandon places of joy. Encountering a bad friend, they will be born in a place where there is no Buddha; even if they encounter a Buddha's age, their eyes will take no delight in seeing him, they will take no delight in hearing the Dharma, and they will not live in harmony with the Buddha's community."
