'Bodhisattvas here initially establish their minds', and so forth: this means that by initially abiding in the principle of emptiness and non-self, they are able to abide in the family of the Buddha, and are therefore named 'peaceful abiding' (ādhimuktikāvasthā / initial abiding). Hence in the commentary on the sūtra they are called the 'ten understandings', because they understand the principle of emptiness. Therefore the Benye jing says: 'When the mind abides in the principle of emptiness, it is named abiding.' The Avataṃsaka-sūtra says: 'The abidings of bodhisattvas are inconceivable, equal to the realm of phenomena and empty space. Therefore they are able to abide in the family of the Buddhas of the three periods of time.' Although understanding the principle of emptiness is called 'understanding', they are not yet able to give rise to the wondrous practice of non-abiding based on that understanding; this is named 'practice not yet superior'.
