如是等經。廣說諸行。是成佛因。非但六度。如何禪師。確執禪定。成佛正因。非餘度耶。然諸聖教說智勝。成佛正因。餘皆助緣。即如華嚴經第十三云。文殊師利問智首菩薩言。佛子。於佛法中。智為上首。大無量壽經上卷偈云。

Sūtras such as these broadly explain that manifold practices are the cause of achieving Buddhahood, not only the six pāramitās. How can the Chan master obstinately insist that dhyāna alone is the correct cause of achieving Buddhahood, and not the other pāramitās? However, all sacred teachings state that wisdom is supreme, being the correct cause of achieving Buddhahood, while the rest are all auxiliary conditions. For instance, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, fascicle thirteen, states: 'Mañjuśrī asked Jñānaprabha Bodhisattva, saying: "Son of the Buddha, in the Buddha-dharma, wisdom is foremost."' A verse in the upper fascicle of the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra states:
