Return! Who could endure saṃsāra in this Western quarter? / Let us together recite that name of Amitābha, / And be reborn in Sukhāvatī, seated upon a transformed terrace. / Return! The worldly realm of Sahā is full of unbearable suffering! / Quickly, single-mindedly recite that Buddha's name; / Amitābha's Pure Land Dharma gate is opened wide. / Return! Who could bear the disasters here? / Urging all those with shared karmic affinity, / Strive together to lead one another and return! / Let us together be reborn in the Land of Bliss, / Offering special flowers everywhere to that Tathāgata. / Return! Birth, old age, sickness, and death urgently press upon us; / Day and night, one must diligently recite that Buddha's name, / To roam at ease in Sukhāvatī, seated upon a jewelled terrace. / Return! In the place of suffering in Sahā, weep and wail bitterly! / Quickly, single-mindedly recite Amitābha Buddha's name; / Take eternal leave of the five defilements to see the Tathāgata. / Return! Amitābha's pure land Dharma gate is opened wide; / If only you have a sincere mind able to recite the Buddha's name, / At the end of life you are certain to sit upon a transformed terrace. / Return! Day and night, cries of 'How bitter!' are heard; / Strive to turn your mind and return to the Pure Land, / To pay homage to the Tathāgata in the mani palace. / Return! The defiled realm of Sahā cannot be lingered in; / Quickly, you must return to the Land of Bliss, / To see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, and awaken to the unborn. / Return! The three wretched paths and the hells are truly pitiable; / A thousand births and ten thousand deaths without rest, / Through many kalpas constantly burned by fierce flames. / Utter recitation of Amitābha's name voice after voice; / All who hear it at once sit upon golden terraces. / Return! The mountain of knives and grove of swords are truly hard to bear; / Drinking wine, eating meat, and craving wealth and sex, / For long kalpas one's body enters the cauldron of boiling water. / It cannot compare to the place of joy in the West, / Forever transcending birth and death, free from impermanence.
