Amitābha established his teaching in the West, / And its rightful transmission has arrived in the Great Tang. / Amid the realm of the five defilements, he spurs [us toward] the Pure Land; / Along the path of the three wretched paths, he builds a ford and bridge. / His revealing of the gates of instruction is exceedingly swift; / He urges people as an expedient to scatter fragrant flowers. / Sukhāvatī is seen in contemplation from the marks of the mind; / The karmic defilements of Jambudvīpa vanish on their own. / Practitioners, strive to encourage contemplating the Buddha; / Seeing the Buddha, you will be born upon a terrace of seven jewels. / If a single thought of doubt arises and you lack faith, / You will be transmigrating through the three wretched paths for myriad kalpas. / Entering the initial gate of the Pure Land seems broad; / Seeking mercy through repentance turns out to be difficult. / To tell those who harbour doubt and slander: / Come together here, and see your bodies smashed. / Amitābha's realm is exceedingly light and peaceful; / Those with faith must examine it closely and carefully. / Though one may see the Buddha's body with all its marks and signs, / One should especially focus upon contemplating the white curl. / The jewelled realm in the West is a vast and adorned city; / The terraces of the seven-jewelled pools are filled with the transformationally born. / In the Garden of Delight, the Buddha preaches the Dharma; / Amid the aśoka trees, birds expound the sūtras. / Avalokiteśvara's marks and signs crush all heterodoxies, / Gathering in the common folk into the Buddha's home. / For seven days make them cultivate contemplation of Sukhāvatī; / When the contemplation is perfected, they will sit upon lotus flowers. / The unborn Sukhāvatī is truly worthy of seeking; / Those going with one mind, do not dally or delay. / When samādhi is suddenly attained in accordance with mindfulness, / Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta will act on your behalf. / The jewelled pavilions of the Western Pure Land are lofty; / Those going with one mind, do not begrudge the toil. / With a single thought of right contemplation, you will immediately arrive; / Upon arrival, you will first step onto the purple-gold bridge.
