I observe that in the human realm sinful karmas abound: / living beings commit them themselves and also teach others to do so. / Greedily seeking wealth and sex, they find no true joy; / from their mouths they are unwilling to chant Amitābha.
From morning to night they indulge their mouths in fresh meat and blood, / severing others' lives without pity or compassion. / The Buddha taught that no enmity goes unrequited: / in the three wretched paths, [such beings] are boiled in cauldrons of broth in return.
The mountain of knives with ten thousand blades is naturally gleaming like silver; / the sword-tree forest with a thousand peaks is fresh as frost and snow. / The fiercely blazing furnace never ceases, / its mouth awaiting the meat-eaters of Jambudvīpa.
Advancing on the path in the West surpasses Sahā, / for there are no five desires or evil māras. / Achieving buddhahood requires no toil of various wholesome deeds: / one sits upright on a lotus terrace, reciting Amitābha.
Living beings in the five defilements mostly backslide; / it is better to recite the Buddha's name and go to the West. / Upon arriving there, one naturally achieves right awakening / and returns to the sea of suffering to serve as a ferry.
The Dharma King universally urges the recitation of Amitābha, / with the intent that all living beings cross the river of craving. / On the highest grade of lotus terraces one beholds the Compassionate Lord; / those who arrive there have all done so through much recitation of the Buddha's name.
Amitābha now wishes to journey through the ten directions: / banners, pennants, and jewelled canopies lead the way. / Bodhisattvas in the sky make heavenly music, / praising and singing: "In Sukhāvatī, what more is there to sorrow over?"
The kalaviṅka's hues are especially supreme, / and there are also peacocks, kings among birds. / Day and night their calls ring out without rest, / constantly lamenting living beings who dwell in realms of suffering.
Jewelled towers and jewelled pavilions connect with the clouds; / the ground is spacious and level, with gateways of a hundred jewels. / The Compassionate Lord faces south and ascends the jewelled seat; / his jewelled hand constantly beckons those who recite the Buddha's name.
Do not shrink from the pain even if your bodies are crushed to pieces; / when ignorance is completely dispersed, the sprouts of goodness will grow. / Evil karma and the six sense objects will naturally be called extinguished, / and you will wander freely in Sukhāvatī as your heart desires.
The mark of the white curl of hair is exceedingly distinct; / his hundred billion emanations transform living beings. / Strive diligently and recite the Buddha's name often; / the holy assembly of the West will spontaneously come to welcome you.
Purple terraces, golden pavilions, and pearl nets; / jewelled banners stand lofty, piercing through the clouds. / All those who have the affinity can go there, / linked arm in arm, crossing the Dharma bridge together.
Carefully examining all the holy teachings, / the principle of reciting the Buddha's name is the most enduringly effective. / Spending little effort, one nevertheless achieves success; / at life's end, the holy assembly will personally come to lead you away.
Arriving in that western realm of Peaceful Nourishment, / one is joyful and glad, forever free from sorrow. / Thought by thought, only merit increases and grows; / birth, old age, sickness, and death cease forever.
Living beings in that land are constantly joyful; / the three evil [destinies] and six paths have never been heard of there. / In a single moment, in a single time, following the assembly in listening, / by hearing one [teaching], one awakens to and understands hundreds of thousands of approaches.
The Western Pure Land is truly worthy of dwelling in; / if you wish to seek rebirth, generate utmost sincerity. / Amitābha enjoins us to recite his name; / simply concentrate your mind for the rest of your life.
You must swiftly recite the Buddha's name and not dawdle; / if you wish to cross the sea of suffering, you require a boat. / Invoking the name is certain to bring rebirth in the Land of Bliss, / forever cutting off the flow of birth and death in Jambudvīpa.
Among the ten thousand practices, it is the most urgent; / in swiftness, nothing exceeds the Pure Land gate. / Not only did our original teacher speak this with his golden mouth, / but all buddhas of the ten directions together proclaim and teach it.
Do not begrudge reciting the Buddha's name day after day; / Amitābha's original vow promises to summon you. / When approaching the end of life, you will be reborn in the Land of Bliss; / hearing the Dharma and awakening to it, you will attain ease and freedom.
The bliss of Sukhāvatī in the West resounds gloriously; / those who hear of it turn their minds and aspire for rebirth. / Though they never knew whether the road was near or far, / they are humbled and grateful that the Tathāgata personally comes to welcome them.
The Compassionate Honoured One's vow-power established the West: / kingfisher halls and carved pavilions are adorned with seven jewels. / Corals are scattered in adornment all over the stairs and pavement; / the ground is laid with gold, lush and yellow.
The cool waters of virtue spread over golden sands, / their reflections mingling with auspicious clouds and bright brocade mist. / Let not the assembled crowd say this Dharma service is in vain; / from the heavens above, celestial flowers rain down from time to time.
In that land, gentle breezes blow through the jewelled groves; / a thousand kinds of natural flutes play the sounds of the Dharma. / Beside the lion seats, white jade is set; / along the walkways of devas and humans, yellow gold is paved.
A day in the West is longer than a kalpa; / the opening and closing of the lotus flowers are exceedingly distinct. / Assembly, recite the Buddha's name and seek samādhi; / upon the purple-gold terrace, your true name is written.
The teachings expounded by the Tathāgata are vast and boundless; / according to capacities, great or small, he delivers those with affinity. / All eighty-four thousand [teachings] bring liberation, / but none surpasses the gate of reciting the Buddha's name in speed.
Amitābha's lifespan is truly limitless; / his light shines without hindrance across the sands of the Ganges. / Each and every one touched by his light is gathered in, / in lifetime after lifetime sitting forever upon a jewelled lotus flower.
Lotus buds bloom abundantly throughout the West; / in the ponds are mallards, wild geese, and mandarin ducks. / Each and every sound proclaims the Dharma; / every single flower and stem diffuses fragrance.
In the sky, a rain of flowers twirls and swirls, / scattering upon the coral ground to form terraces. / The wind blows the falling leaves, and the leaves fly away; / blowing away the withered flowers, fresh flowers return again.
The delusions of the six emotions grasp at conditions everywhere, / so that samādhi has no way to become manifest. / Diligently sever the thieves of ignorance with the light; / make haste together to ascend the jewelled lotuses.
Amitābha's name is inconceivable; / everyone should know that hearing it extinguishes sins. / Only invoke the name to be reborn in the pure land; / all must have deep faith and harbour no doubt.
When one person in this realm recites the Buddha's name, / in the West a single lotus is born. / If only you sit [in practice] constantly without backsliding, / that single flower will come straight here to welcome you.
Pure pond water reflects the lotus terraces; / towering jewelled lands shine, opening to the heavens. / The lofty Compassionate Lord constantly smiles gently, / gathering in each and every person who comes for rebirth.
Do not blame me for repeatedly and earnestly urging you; / I see that people pass away, yet none attain permanence. / If you attain the deep samādhi of reciting the Buddha's name, / you will not fear the future King of Equanimity.
A thousand tiers of fragrant trees, ten thousand tiers of fragrance; / their light shines upon the seven-jewelled sands in the ponds. / From the jewelled sands, mani water wells forth; / wherever the water flows, it is pure and spotless.
Nets of indranīla pearls radiate purple-gold light, / illuminating seven-jewelled halls numerous as the sands of the Ganges. / Every single flower gives birth to buddha lands; / voice upon voice praises that Western realm.
Upon the lapis lazuli ground stands the purple-gold mountain; / soaring colors and flowing mists mirror the world. / Living beings of the five defilements suffer much feverish anguish; / the Western Pure Land is exceedingly tranquil and serene.
Within the seven-jewelled ponds are flower terraces; / within Amitābha's hall, light shines and unfolds. / You living beings, diligently recite the Buddha's name; / all of you, be reborn from the three realms and come here.
The Western world is exceedingly exquisite; / with concentrated mind, recollect and gaze up at the jewelled city. / Because the practice of contemplating the marks is deep and far-reaching, / you will realize the unborn within the lotus assembly.
