Śākya's compassionate mind pervades the Dharma realm; / wriggling creatures and conscious beings are all pitied. / He wishes to transform them so that all attain liberation, / yet beings' sinful karma lacks affinity with him. / Therefore he instructs them all to take refuge in the Pure Land, / where Amitābha has longstanding karmic causes. / Not only do the people of Sahā go there alone; / those who go from other worlds are also boundless. / Amitābha gathers and transforms without weariness or satiety, / his compassionate mind constantly circling the world. / If only one has sincere devotion and can recite the Buddha's name, / his white curl's light shines straight and bright before one's eyes. / Beings numerous as dust motes in the worlds of the ten directions / simultaneously reach their life's end and all vow to be reborn. / Discerning the desires of those beings' minds, / his emanated bodies spread everywhere, simultaneously welcoming them. / Look upon that Amitābha and his retinue: / long ago in past kalpas they planted vast causes. / Ordinary beings and sages alike possess identical marks and characteristics; / humans and devas share a single purple-golden body. / Jewelled trees, jewelled towers, flying jewelled pavilions, / jewelled ponds, jewelled ground, and jewelled lotuses. / The earth and empty sky are filled with sages and saints; / in the flowers, all are transformationally born sons. / Since Amitābha achieved the Way, ten kalpas have passed; / all sentient beings vow to go to the West. / Bodhisattvas and śrāvakas cannot be counted; / how could the sages of five supernatural powers ever be measured? / The people of that land dwell on the ground of non-retrogression, / forever transcending birth and death, severing impermanence. / As the nine grades of flowers blossom, according with early liberation, / what harm is there in serenely attaining realization? / When a bodhisattva achieves the Way, it is entirely for the sake of beings; / when beings are not yet mature, achieving the Way is difficult. / Because of this, [Maitreya] dwells in Tuṣita awaiting the affinity for transformation, / constantly looking down and contemplating with a focused mind. / Only when human life reaches eighty thousand years will he achieve the Way; / encountering affinities at the three assemblies, they realize nirvāṇa. / If they all turn their minds together to be reborn in the Pure Land, / they may freely come and go to observe at that time. / The sands-of-the-Gaṅgā Buddhas of the three realms in the ten directions / are consummate in merit and virtue, equally flawless. / The adornments of their jewelled lands are all of one kind, / yet they all praise Sukhāvatī together. / If any only hear the name, they tumble headlong toward it; / their name is definitively set for liberation, obtained without delay. / The Tathāgata does not perish but returns to tranquil extinction, / sending forth relics that pervade the three-thousandfold world. / Jewelled stupas and pagodas are erected with his images; / worship and recollection are offered, burning blends of a hundred incenses. / Although the wondrous practices of bodhisattvas are boundless, / you should know that recitation of the Buddha's name is foremost. / Mounting this cause and condition to be reborn in the Pure Land, / in an instant one arrives before the World-Honoured One. / The subtle words of the Tripiṭaka are the true sacred teaching, / hard to encounter, hard to pass through, and hard to meet again. / Only after passing through kalpas numerous as the sands of the Gaṅgā River / does one know there is this Western Pure Land gate. / In a single moment of focused mind one transcends birth and death; / throughout one's life there is no regression, and the Buddha welcomes the soul. / Avalokiteśvara saves and gathers with many skillful means; / his supernatural powers and transformations are truly hard to conceive. / Sometimes he turns his body to achieve right awakening, / or becomes an attendant, manifesting master and disciple. / The desires and minds of beings are not uniform; / according with affinities in the six destinies, he responds as fitting for the time. / He exhorts and guides them all to return to the Pure Land, / causing all to see the Buddha and realize the unconditioned. / Mahāsthāmaprāpta dwells in Amitābha's land, / having attained an incomparable purple-golden body as retribution. / To deliver beings he comes to this realm, / manifesting a form identical to people of this world. / Pitying the blazing suffering of the burning house, / according with affinities in the six destinies he forcefully pulls them forth, / sending them toward the Western land of peace and stability, / causing them to cut off the causes and conditions of birth and death. / The sages and saints of the Western Pure Land / have supernatural mastery surpassed by none. / Following one another in a single thought, they roam the Buddha-lands; / how many sands of the Gaṅgā in kalpas have they traversed? / They make offerings in the worlds of the ten directions, / simultaneously expounding the Dharma and hearing it all at once. / As for the Buddhas numerous as the sands of the Gaṅgā in dust-mote worlds, / how could the function of their six supernatural powers ever be fully named? / Hearing of that Land of Bliss of Amitābha, / all thirst with longing and pay earnest attention. / How much more so should ordinary beings wandering aimlessly / not seek liberation to transcend worldly glory? / The śrāvakas of the ten directions and three periods of time / cannot be known through calculations across exhausting kalpas. / The Buddhas, Tathāgatas, skillfully transform them, / causing them all to reach the fruit and cut off greed and delusion. / Pointing out the Western Land of Bliss, / hearing the name, all lament having been late to be reborn. / People of liberation all aspire and delight in it; / if ordinary beings do not go, what are they waiting for?
