In the mantra, all characters with the mouth radical are pronounced according to their original sound with a roll of the tongue; those without a mouth radical are read according to the character. The above mantra was translated earlier and put into circulation: in the morning, clean the mouth with a willow twig, scatter flowers, burn incense, and kneeling on both knees with palms joined before a Buddha statue, recite it two or three sets of seven times each day; this extinguishes such sins as the four gravities and five heinous deeds, protects the present body from being afflicted by various untimely disasters, and at life's end ensures birth in the land of Amitāyus, leaving behind female rebirth forever. Now, upon collating further with the Sanskrit text and consulting with the brāhmaṇa monk Vinayabuddhasaṅgha and others, we know that the awesome power of this mantra is inconceivable. Reciting it 108 times each at dawn, dusk, and noon extinguishes the four gravities and five heinous deeds, pulls out the roots of all sins, and attains rebirth in the West. If one can recite it with utter sincerity until completing two hundred thousand times, the sprout of bodhi will grow and one will realize non-retrogression; upon completing three hundred thousand times, one will see Amitābha Buddha face to face and will definitely attain rebirth in the Pure Land of Bliss. This dhāraṇī and its virtues need not be recited when conducting liturgical services.
