Surveying the three realms, all are purely suffering; / ordinary people indulge in them, treating matters lightly. / In the ocean of desire, karmic winds stir up waves; / bobbing up and plunging down, when has there ever been a pause? / Sinking into evil destinies across many kalpas, / occasionally one goes and takes a single journey among humans and gods. / In foolish greed, clinging and grasping, they covet all modes of existence; / transmigrating in the six destinies, dying and being reborn again. / Rising to the heaven of neither perception nor non-perception, one still falls back down, / thereupon entering pits ablaze for ten thousand fathoms. / On the sword-trees, bodies are severed, minds and vitals shattered; / how could one endure the pulling of the tongue ploughed by iron ploughs? / Today, with utmost sincerity, I take refuge and bow in homage / to Amitābha, the Two-Footed Honoured One, the light of the world. / I only wish your compassion would condescend to embrace us; / embraced by the light from your brow, may [the sprouts of bodhi] begin to sprout. / Calling his name and reciting the Buddha's name, the sounds continue unbroken; / the assembly of sages raises the flower pedestals of seven jewels. / If one can constantly look up in longing toward that land, / at the end of life the Buddha is also certain to personally welcome [them].
