Mañjuśrī asked the Buddha: "Bhagavat, when practicing this dharma, can there be many people?" The Buddha said: "From one person or more, up to twenty people or fewer. When practicing this dharma, one should also never contemplate other scriptures. From this repentance onward, do not commit [the offenses] again later; this is called the method of repentance. One should make this reflection: 'We are now like those who have returned to life from death. I shall uphold the precepts, I shall be diligent, and I shall read and recite the Mahāyāna vaipulya [sūtras].' That person, at that time, should make this reflection: 'Beginning from this day forward, I shall firmly uphold the restrictive precepts, vowing to make them like vajra.' When this person makes this reflection, the Great Being Vimalakīrti, along with immeasurable bodhisattvas, stands before that person to bear timely witness for them. The Venerable Samantabhadra performs the karma for them. The Venerable Kāśyapa acts as their preceptor of reliance. The Buddha told Mañjuśrī: "This is called the eradication of sins, this is called liberation, this is called possessing the precepts, and this is called attaining stability."
