佛復告彌勒：「有踐跡者無踐跡者？有果證無果證耶？是有為性非有為性耶？是有為中無為性耶？是無為中無為性耶？是有漏中無漏性耶？是無漏中無漏性耶？是欲界中有盡性耶？是欲界中無盡性耶？是色無色界中有盡性耶？是色無色界中無盡性耶？是空界滅識性耶？是空界非滅識性耶？乃至有為空、無為空、自性空、有以有為空、無以無為空、大空、取空、一相無相空、有餘涅槃空、無餘涅槃空，是踐性耶？非踐性耶？」

The Buddha again told Maitreya: "Is there one who treads the path or one who does not tread the path? Is there fruition and realization or no fruition and realization? Is it of conditioned nature or of non-conditioned nature? Is it an unconditioned nature within the conditioned? Is it an unconditioned nature within the unconditioned? Is it an outflow-free nature within outflows? Is it an outflow-free nature within the outflow-free? Is it an exhaustible nature within the desire realm? Is it an inexhaustible nature within the desire realm? Is it an exhaustible nature within the form and formless realms? Is it an inexhaustible nature within the form and formless realms? Is it a nature of space that ceases consciousness? Is it a nature of space that does not cease consciousness? Up to the emptiness of the conditioned, the emptiness of the unconditioned, the emptiness of intrinsic nature, the emptiness of existence through conditioned existence, the emptiness of nonexistence through unconditioned nonexistence, great emptiness, the emptiness of grasping, the emptiness of the single characteristic and non-characteristic, the emptiness of nirvāṇa with remainder, and the emptiness of nirvāṇa without remainder—is it a treading nature, or is it a non-treading nature?"
