3.26

爾時有天子名曰拘毘，白佛言：「佛降伏魔，非是魔力是佛神力。何以故？彼眾生類不解俗法及以道法，以是欲化眾生故降致魔來。其有眾生見諸魔者，心不願樂如千眼比，數千萬眾心立不退轉地。」

At that time, there was a devaputra named Gopi who said to the Buddha: “The Buddha subduing the māra was not due to the māra’s power, but was the Buddha’s supernatural power. Why is this? That class of sentient beings did not understand worldly conventions or the truths of the Way; it was because he wished to transform sentient beings that he caused the māra to come. When any sentient beings saw the māras, their minds felt no desire or pleasure [in them], like the comparison of the Thousand-Eyed One; tens of millions in the assembly had their minds established in the stage of non-retrogression.”
