4.65

「眾生欲出離，三界五道閡，
精進不懈怠，安住無為道。
如人起屋舍，非材木得成，
要先修治地，次立牆壁柱。
佛道如大空，不由一行成，
執志要堅固，放心無戀慕。
過佛如恒沙，來者不可盡，
或有次第成，亦有超越者。
我今悟未悟，令至八正道，
聞輒不再受，此法由誰造？
昔吾捨身想，劫數不以難；
無師而自覺，得為一切導。
導師出現世，非緣不降神；
要度未度者，示現無為城。」

"Sentient beings wish to escape and leave behind
the hindrances of the three realms and five destinies;
let them be vigorous and not indolent,
and peacefully abide in the unconditioned path.
Just as when a person builds a house,
it is not accomplished by timber alone;
first one must prepare and level the ground,
and then erect walls and pillars.
The Buddha path is like great space:
it is not accomplished by a single practice.
Hold your resolve firmly;
release your mind, free from yearning and clinging.
Past Buddhas are like the sands of the Ganges;
those to come cannot be numbered.
Some attain [awakening] in succession,
and there are also those who leap over.
Now, whether you are awakened or not yet awakened,
I cause you to reach the eightfold noble path.
Upon hearing it, one will never be reborn again;
by whom was this Dharma created?
Formerly I gave up the thought of bodily self,
and did not consider the number of kalpas difficult;
having awakened by myself without a teacher,
I became the guide for all.
When a guide appears in the world,
he does not descend without conditions;
he must cross over those not yet crossed over,
and manifest the city of the unconditioned."
