The Buddha told those assembled: "A Buddha appears in the world only once in billions of kalpas, like the udumbara blossom. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's fundamental dharma of the supernormal powers of the exhaustion of outflows eliminates conceptions and dispels thoughts, this is called 'exhaustible'; when one does not see the dharmas of the exhaustion of outflows and thoughtlessness, this is called 'inexhaustible'. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva conceives the body to be bound and attached and does not reach the other shore, this is called 'exhaustible'; being able to eliminate the conception of the body and not abiding in either this or that, this is called 'inexhaustible'. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva has unloosed the fetters but does not abide in the reality-limit, this is called 'exhaustible'; not seeing fetters and being empty of any conception of self, this is called 'inexhaustible'. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva enters inhalation and exhalation, observes all worlds, and comprehends them as having nothing at all, this is called 'exhaustible'; distinguishing emptiness while seeing neither salvation nor non-salvation, and seeing realms as not diverse, this is called 'inexhaustible'. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva practices the sixteen superior dharmas to deliver asaṃkhyeyas of sentient beings, this is called 'exhaustible'; that the sixteen superior [dharmas] are intrinsically empty and quiescent, seeing neither delivery nor non-delivery, this is called 'inexhaustible'. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva extensively purifies lands, undertaking suffering for sentient beings without considering it toil, this is called 'exhaustible'; not seeing sentient beings, and seeing lands as pure and not manifold, this is called 'inexhaustible'. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva upholds the precepts, practices the Dharma, and enters the three gates of liberation, this is called 'exhaustible'; not seeing sentient beings as broken in precepts or whole in precepts, this is called 'inexhaustible'.
