爾時，八大國王：優填王、頂生王、惡生王、阿闍世王；四大兵馬主：最豪兵馬主、容顏兵馬主、熾盛兵馬主、金剛兵馬主，此八大王共諍舍利，各領兵眾列住一面。八大王各各言：「佛舍利我應獨得之。」有一大臣名優波吉諫言：「諸王！莫𠲜佛舍利，應當分之普共供養，何為興兵共相征罰？」

At that time, the eight great kings—King Udayana, King Mūrdhagata, King Virūḍhaka, and King Ajātaśatru; along with the commanders of the four great armies: the Commander of the Most Valiant Army, the Commander of the Radiant Army, the Commander of the Blazing Army, and the Commander of the Vajra Army—these eight great kings disputed over the śarīra, each leading their troops and lining up on one side. The eight great kings each said, “I alone should obtain the Buddha’s śarīra.” A minister named Upakāśa admonished them, saying, “O Kings! Do not fight over the Buddha’s śarīra; it should be divided so that all may worship it together. Why raise troops and wage war against one another?”
