Then Upakāśa said, “Gentlemen, please stop! The śarīra should be shared among all.” They immediately divided it into three shares: one share for the devas, one share for the nāga kings, and one share for the eight kings, using a golden urn holding just over one dān. This minister had secretly coated the inside of the urn with honey, and measured and divided the śarīra with the urn. The devas obtained their śarīra and returned to the heavens, immediately erecting a seven-jeweled stūpa. The nāgas obtained their śarīra and returned to the nāga palace, likewise erecting a seven-jeweled stūpa. The eight kings obtained their śarīra and each returned to their own kingdom, likewise erecting seven-jeweled stūpas. The minister Upakāśa obtained three dǒu of śarīra adhering to the golden urn together with the urn, and also erected a seven-jeweled stūpa. For the ashes and earth, forty-nine hú in all, forty-nine seven-jeweled stūpas were erected. At the place of the jhāpita, a seven-jeweled stūpa was also erected, forty-nine fathoms high, worshipped with incense, flowers, hanging silk banners, and canopies, with the sounds of music continuing unbroken day and night. Through the Buddha’s spiritual power, the seven-jeweled stūpas each emitted light; some emitted light at night no different from daytime, and some emitted light by day no different from nighttime. Good spirits protecting the stūpas came to safeguard them, preventing evil persons from violating them.
