「最勝四神足,住壽無數劫;
涅槃無所著,示現有為法;
八等無為道,賢聖所行路;
道從無常觀,思惟不淨法;
羅漢、辟支佛,償對復甚我;
智慧舍利弗,常行佛功德;
神足目揵連,步步登須彌;
娑竭阿羅漢,降伏難陀龍;
金花比丘尼,神德難可量;
當來復有佛,令在此座上;
菩薩摩訶薩,精進不懈怠;
“Even with the supreme four ṛddhipādas, staying alive for countless kalpas;
Though heaven and earth be utterly destroyed, and Sumeru reduced to fine dust,
Karmic actions pursue the person, with nowhere to hide.
I have attained the most perfect enlightenment, without equal in the three realms,
Yet I still underwent nine retributions, bound by deeds of past lives.
Though I possess the power of samādhi, adamantine and indestructible,
I could not evade karmic retribution, nor cast it aside to avoid its encounter.
Now the conditions for my present life are exhausted; at this point there is no further share;
I am forever parted from saṃsāra, and shall no longer produce such deeds.
Humans mostly crave the five desires, negligent and unrestrained;
In this life and in future lives, they constantly fall into realms of sorrow.
Nirvāṇa is devoid of attachment, yet conditioned dharmas are manifested;
If I were not to manifest transformations, sentient beings would be difficult to save.
The eightfold equitable unconditioned path is the path walked by sages and saints;
Departing far from all fetters and attachments, there are no dharmas of arising and ceasing.
The path arises from contemplating impermanence, reflecting upon impure dharmas;
With a single mind unmoving, one accomplishes all the marks and signs.
Arhats and pratyekabuddhas pay their debts even more severely than I;
Pursued by their karmic actions, where can they find escape?
Wise Śāriputra, who constantly practiced the Buddha’s virtues,
Suffered a prolapsed bowel and attained parinirvāṇa: this is clear proof.
With miraculous foot-power Maudgalyāyana ascended Sumeru stride by stride;
Yet he was beaten by a staff-wielding brahmacārin, his bones shattered like mustard seeds.
Sāgara Arhat subdued the Nāga Nanda;
When he was about to attain parinirvāṇa, his eyes fell out countless times.
The nun Suvarṇapuṣpā possessed miraculous virtue difficult to measure;
She transformed into a wheel-turning sage king, presiding over the four continents,
Yet upon casting off her life to enter the unconditioned, her limbs were severed by swords.
The pratyekabuddha named Prabhāsa, when no Buddha’s Dharma appeared in the world,
Ended his life in accord with the world, attaining parinirvāṇa in a cauldron of boiling soup.
I now speak of the present, of these various karmic retributions;
Were I to speak of the past, the deeds of asakhya Buddhas,
Reckoning kalpa upon kalpa, karmic retributions could never be exhausted.
In the future there will again be a Buddha who will sit upon this seat;
He too will speak of karmic retribution, no different from now.
Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, be vigorous and not indolent;
You must urgently leave karmic retribution behind, and not abide with it.”
