"Furthermore, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, upon the stage of the third dhyāna, gazes upward toward the eighth abode; though gazing, he does not attain it, yet day and night he strives diligently, seeking a pure mind. Entering the fourth dhyāna, he sees face-to-face the Buddhas of the ten directions, who expound to him the non-retrogressive Dharma of the fourth dhyāna. With unobstructed liberation he practices the four ṛddhipādas, capable of dividing his single body into countless bodies and merging countless bodies into a single body, entering the fire-light samādhi, pervading the trichiliocosm, causing those sentient beings who behold the fire-light samādhi to become terrified with their hair standing on end, coming of their own accord to take refuge with the bodhisattva, and by the power of samādhi they attain deliverance. At that time, in the fourth dhyāna, he discerns the tathatā and dharmatā of the worlds, yet his mind falls back to cultivate the practices of the sixth abode; the bodhisattva reflects: 'I have not yet attained the stage of non-retrogression. How shall I attain the eighth abode?' In the fourth dhyāna he diligently cultivates, purifying the deeds of sentient beings and enduring hardship on their behalf. Although practicing this dharma, he does not praise himself, removes arrogance, is devoid of an 'I' and 'mine', cultivates the six recollections, and although practicing the Path while dwelling among the nine abodes of sentient beings, his mind is not defiled by or attached to birth-and-death; his mind is suddenly awakened and attains non-retrogression. This is called the bodhisattva-mahāsattva obtaining a pure mind in the noble truths."
