"The floral fragrances and candana
Produced on Mount Gandhamādana,
And all the fragrances across the three realms,
Are not as supreme as the fragrance of morality.
The fragrance of morality destroys all defilements,
Coming and going, penetrating even the Avīci [hell];
For a non-retrogressing bodhisattva,
The fragrance of nirvāṇa is foremost.
Like a skilled archer
Shooting upwards into empty space:
The force of the arrow not exhausting the void,
It quickly falls back down to earth;
Yet the fragrance of virtue extends endlessly far,
Never to turn back or return.
Now I speak of the fragrance of the Buddha's body—
Morality, samādhi, wisdom, and liberation:
Even through hundreds of thousands of koṭis of kalpas,
One could not exhaust the Buddha's fragrance.
Even if for thousands of myriads of kalpas,
A Buddha were to praise a Buddha's merits,
That Great Sage could not exhaust
The fragrance of moral virtue of the Buddha's body.
By the awe-inspiring Dharma of the Buddhas,
When conferring prophecy upon the one next in succession,
A five-coloured fragrance from his mouth
Ascends up to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven;
Returning again to the Buddha's place,
It circumambulates the Buddha's body seven times.
All the devas scatter fragrant flowers,
Praising it as unprecedented;
The fragrance of samādhi spreads afar,
Delivering asaṃkhyeyas [of beings]."
