At that time, in the assembly there was a bodhisattva named Priyadarśana—possessing unimpeded eloquence, having ascended to the ten abodes, and able to retain all the practices of the Tathāgata. He immediately arose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, joined his palms with fingers clasped, went forward and said to the Buddha: "Excellent, Bhagavat! Now hearing this Dharma is unprecedented. Did the past countless Ganges-sands Tathāgatas enter nirvāṇa or not enter nirvāṇa? If they entered nirvāṇa, how are sentient beings of the desire realm to be delivered? If the Tathāgatas do not enter nirvāṇa, in what Buddha-realms do those Tathāgatas abide?"
