The Buddha said to Maitreya, "Do you not remember that in the ancient past, countless asaṃkhyeya kalpas ago, sixty-two Ganges-sands of Buddha-lands away to the northwest of here, there was a Buddha named Samatā, whose land was named Formless, where he is now present and speaking the Dharma, without pratyekabuddha or śrāvaka vehicles, and without sun, moon, seasons, or number of kalpas? That Buddha's teaching and transformation completely encompass a single Buddha-realm, and the sentient beings of his present realm all attain Buddhahood, never moving to another Buddha's world. What do you think, Maitreya? Should that Buddha be named past, future, or present?"
