The Buddha said to Maitreya, 'Now I shall explain to you the meaning of arising and the meaning of faculties. Listen attentively! Listen attentively! Ponder it well! What is the meaning of arising? Arising refers to the seven and the nine. A faculty means connection and continuity. The Tathāgata has no attachment; he has the faculty of having known, the faculty of what is not yet known, and the faculty of having nothing to know. The faculty of having known belongs to the past, the future, and the present. The faculty of what is not yet known belongs to the fetters, defilements, and hindrances. The faculty of having nothing to know belongs to the Tathāgatas, the Truly Real Ones, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones. The Buddhas of the past, future, and present achieve this faculty and discern all faculties: without faculties yet not without faculties, without explanation and without meaning, discerning that the meaning of words is empty and non-existent—such is the meaning of faculties. From the initial arousal of the aspiration [for awakening] up to sitting beneath the king of trees, turning the unexcelled wheel of Dharma and gathering all Dharma gates: the Dharma gate of practicing non-action, the Dharma gate of what can be conceived, the Dharma gate of the faculty of dhāraṇī, and the Dharma gate of the treasury of space—this is the essential samādhi of all Buddhas. Maitreya, you should know: you have furthermore received the prophecy that in fifty-six billion and seventy million years, you will achieve unexcelled complete enlightenment beneath this king of trees. I was born from the right flank; you, Maitreya, will be born from the crown of the head. While my lifespan is one hundred years, Maitreya, your lifespan will be eighty-four thousand years. My land is of earth; your land will be of gold. My land is filled with suffering; your land will be filled with joy.'
