Then the Bhagavat said to Maitreya Bodhisattva: "Within this assembly now there are no disparate types; all are purely [bodhisattvas] bound to one more birth (ekajātipratibaddha). Now consciousness (vijñāna), ideation (saṃjñā), and sensation (vedanā)—and absence of consciousness, absence of ideation, absence of sensation—shall be taught. At this time, how does a bodhisattva speak of consciousness, ideation, and sensation? Here the bodhisattva discriminates and speaks of consciousness, ideation, and sensation: consciousness is neither ideation nor sensation; sensation is neither consciousness nor ideation; ideation is neither sensation nor consciousness. Ideation is not past, not future, and not present; sensation is not past, not future, and not present; consciousness is not past, not future, and not present. Non-consciousness is not past, not future, and not present; non-ideation is not past, not future, and not present; non-sensation is not past, not future, and not present. How is consciousness not past, future, or present? Here the bodhisattva enters the unobstructed samādhi and transforms beings who perceive consciousness, leading them from the stage of abiding to the stage of non-abiding. This consciousness is not past, not future, and not present. Furthermore, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva transforms beings who perceive ideation, leading them from the stage of abiding to the stage of non-abiding. The bodhisattva transforms beings who perceive sensation, leading them from the stage of abiding to the stage of non-abiding."
