The Buddha told the Bodhisattva Eye of Purity: 'Over countless asaṃkhyeya kalpas, I accumulated and practiced meritorious deeds, universally mindful of all drowning living beings, compassionately feeling pity for their suffering and wishing to deliver them. Why is this? Now that I am in the womb, all that I wished to eliminate has already been completely eliminated; the fruit, vow, and retribution have been obtained today. The living beings of that land do not consider becoming a Buddha or not becoming a Buddha as a burden. Why is this? The living beings of that land establish heroic resolve: they do not abide in a womb of existence, they do not abide in a womb of non-existence, and they do not abide in apparitional birth; their merit is perfected, neither awakening nor non-awakening. What is awakening? What is non-awakening? That I awaken all living beings who are foolish is awakening. That all trainees cut off their fetters is non-awakening.'
