The Buddha told Maitreya: "The dissemination of the śarīras of the Buddhas of the past, future, and present is not something that can be discerned by your realm. Why is that? This śarīra is my very own śarīra; how could one trace the Tathāgata's spiritual consciousness? I shall now distinguish for you the superior, middling, and inferior consciousnesses of the Tathāgata, up to the sarvajña, which are each different. Bodhisattvas of the first dwelling have not yet established their roots, virtues, and powers; although they attain divine powers, bodhisattvas of the second dwelling, viewing with the divine eye, know the destinies of consciousnesses and whether they are in the retreating or non-retreating ground, and also observe those in the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, or observe those born in immeasurable realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges in the east who make offerings to the Buddhas and uphold the monastic rules without hindrance, and also know the eons of their receiving prophecy, from one eon up to hundreds of thousands of billions of eons. There are bodhisattvas on the ground of the third dwelling who observe śarīras and know the destinies of consciousnesses in nirvāṇa with remainder and nirvāṇa without remainder, yet they do not see where the consciousness practiced by those in the fourth dwelling goes. Bodhisattvas of the fourth dwelling see the dharmas of consciousness of the first, second, and third dwellings, yet they do not see where the dharmas of consciousness of the śarīras of the fifth dwelling go."
