The Buddha told Akṣayamati: "Listen attentively, and reflect on it well! Now I will distinguish it for you one by one. Ninety-one kalpas ago, there was a Brahmā king named Mahāpratibhāna. He discerned the past and the present, constantly took pleasure in leisure, and sat within his heavenly palace. [He thought:] 'Now, could I not transform these palace maidens and all the Brahmā devas, so that when I attain Buddhahood, the devas will attend me, shaving their beards and hair, donning the Dharma robes, and all together attaining the path at once—would that not be delightful?' Having had this thought, he went from the heavenly palace to the Pārijāta tree, sat upright and reflected with one mind and single focus, tying his mindfulness before him without any other thoughts, and immediately attained Buddhahood, complete with the thirty-two marks of a great man and the eighty secondary characteristics. His heavenly retinue practiced the true Dharma of monks and attained arhatship, all being of sharp faculties; among the heavenly women, some attained the stage of srotāpanna, sakṛdāgāmin, or anāgāmin, never to return here, entering parinirvāṇa right there. This is what is meant by a Brahmā king not relinquishing the body or receiving a body, but attaining the Buddha path in his present body."
