"Then in the open sky there was a deva who joined his palms and said to the Bodhisattva: 'The power of patience is supreme; it shatters the defilements. Now that you are on the verge of attaining Buddhahood, take care not to turn back!' The past Buddhas and Bhagavats, numerous as the sands of the Ganges, were not like the Bodhisattva in fasting to seek the path. Moved by the celestial spirit, the daughter of the Sujātā family was made to offer milk rice, after eating which his energy and strength were fully restored. For seven days he contemplated and subdued Māra's hordes. When Brahmā descended to make his entreaty, he attained Buddhahood and broadly propagated the great Dharma. This may be called the real path, than which nothing surpasses nirvāṇa. Nirvāṇa is free of birth, aging, illness, and death. Such were the austerities that I experienced in the past."
