At that time, in the assembly there was a bodhisattva named Upholder of Emptiness (持空), endowed with the major and minor marks, who had entered the four Dharma gates. Foremost in eloquence, he cultivated and maintained Buddha fields. In each and every Buddha field, he left behind his body to teach and transform beings, manifesting birth and manifesting extinction according to the capacities of beings. The sounds of his speech held both sweetness and bitterness; speaking of the past, he knew the future, and understood the present with clarity. When asked one thing by another, he responded with ten thousand billion, with meanings so profound they were difficult to fathom. At that time, Bodhisattva Upholder of Emptiness rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, and said to the Buddha: “How do bodhisattvas deliver suffering sentient beings?”
