"We disciples! Having now completed kṣamā for the retributions of the hells, we should now next perform kṣamā for the retributions of the three evil destinies. The Buddha said in a sūtra: 'Because people of many desires seek much gain, their suffering and affliction are also great; contented people, even when lying on the ground, still consider it joyful; discontented people, even when dwelling in the heavenly palaces, are still unsatisfied.' Yet worldly people, when suddenly faced with an urgent catastrophe, can give away wealth without reckoning how much, not knowing that this very body teeters above the deep pit of the three paths—once a breath does not return, they are bound to fall. If suddenly a spiritual friend teaches them to cultivate merit and make provision of future wholesome dharmas, they cling to this stingy mind and have no willingness to act. People like this are foolish and deluded in the extreme! Why is this so? The Buddha said in a sūtra: 'At birth, one comes without bringing a single coin, and in death, one also departs without holding a single coin. Tormenting the body to amass [wealth] brings worry and distress for it; it is of no benefit to oneself and in vain becomes the possession of others. With no good on which to rely and no virtue on which to depend, when life ends, one falls into the evil destinies.' Therefore, we disciples, today with the utmost sincerity knock our heads to the ground and with earnest devotion take refuge in the Buddha:
