"Now, when discussing repentance, it fundamentally means correcting what has passed and cultivating what is to come, eradicating evil and generating good. When living as human beings in the world, who can be free of faults? Even practitioners under training who lose mindfulness still give rise to afflictions; arhats' residual habit-energies still stir physical and verbal karmas. How much less can ordinary beings be without faults? Yet the wise perceive beforehand and are able to reform and repent, whereas the foolish conceal their faults and consequently allow them to proliferate; thus, through accumulating habits throughout the long night, their awakening has no horizon. If one can feel shame and remorse, expose faults, and repent, it is not merely the eradication of offenses: it also multiplies immeasurable merit and establishes the wondrous fruit of the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa."
