"We disciples! Having already completed our kṣamā for the retributions of hell, we should now next perform kṣamā for the retributions of the three evil destinies. In the sūtra the Buddha taught: 'Those with many desires seek much gain, and therefore their suffering and distress are also great. A contented person, though lying on the ground, still finds joy; a discontented person, though dwelling in a heavenly palace, is still unsatisfied.' Yet worldly people, when suddenly faced with urgent danger, can abandon their wealth without counting how much, but they do not know that this very body stands upon the brink of the deep pit of the three wretched paths, and if a single breath does not return, they will surely fall. When a good spiritual friend suddenly teaches them to cultivate merit and virtues, directing them to practice the provisions of wholesome dharmas for the future, they cling to this miserly mind and refuse to act reasonably. Those who are like this are utterly foolish and deluded. Why is this so? In the sūtra the Buddha taught: 'At birth one does not bring a single coin, and at death one does not carry away a single coin. Vainly toiling one's body to accumulate wealth only brings distress and worry; it is of no benefit to oneself and vainly falls to others. With no good deeds to rely on and no virtue to depend upon, it brings about death and rebirth into the evil destinies.' Therefore, we disciples, today with utmost sincere mind bow our heads, and with fervent, genuine sincerity take refuge in the Buddha.
