"Having confessed the hindrance of defilements and having confessed the karmic hindrances, we should now sequentially disclose and confess the hindrances of retribution that are to be eradicated. As it is said in the sūtras: 'When karmic retribution arrives, neither in the sky nor in the ocean, nor entering among mountain rocks, nor anywhere else is there a place where one may escape without receiving retribution.' Only by the power of kṣamā can it be eradicated. How is this known? When Śakra Devānām Indra saw the five signs of decay, seized with deep terror in his heart, he returned with sincerity to the Triratna; the five signs were immediately eradicated and his heavenly lifespan was extended. Cases such as this are made clear by the scriptural teachings. If a person does not encounter good friends to guide them on the path, there is no evil they will not commit, causing them, when great life is about to end and they approach utter exhaustion, to see all the evil signs of hell manifest before them. At that moment, remorse and dread arrive together; not having previously cultivated goodness and repenting only when exhausted, how will it be in time afterwards? Calamities and disasters await in another realm, prepared from of old; alone one will head toward and reach far into hell, where one will step forward and enter the cauldron of boiling oil, body and mind broken to pieces, the spirit tormented in pain. At such a time, if one wishes to seek a single bow or a single repentance, how could it be obtained again?
