"Having already finished repenting the retributions of the hells, now we should further repent the retributions of the three evil paths. In the sūtras, the Buddha taught: 'Those of much desire have much suffering and affliction because they seek much gain; those who are content, though lying on the ground, still consider it joyful. Those who are not content, though dwelling in heavenly palaces, are still not satisfied.' Foolish people of the world, when suddenly faced with urgent distress, can relinquish wealth without counting how much, yet they do not know that this very body teeters over the deep pit of the three wretched destinies, and once a single breath fails to return, they must fall into them. When suddenly a spiritual friend arranges meritorious blessings and urges them to cultivate the provisions of future wholesome dharmas, they cling to this stingy mind and are unwilling to do so—how utterly foolish and deluded such people are! For what reason? In the sūtras, the Buddha taught: 'At birth one brings not a single coin, and in death one carries not a single coin away. Tormenting the body to amass [wealth] brings only grief and distress; it brings no benefit to oneself and becomes the possession of others in vain. With no goodness to rely upon and no merit to lean on, at the end of life one falls into the evil destinies.' Therefore, we disciples today bow our heads and with sincere devotion take refuge in the Buddhas:
