"Next, repenting of the karma of robbery and theft. In the sūtras it is said: 'If an item belongs to another, guarded and protected by another, then regarding this item, even a single blade of grass or a single leaf is not to be taken if not given—how much less to steal it?' Yet sentient beings, merely because they see present advantage, take it by various unrighteous means, causing them to suffer these calamitous consequences in the future. Therefore, the sūtras say: 'The sin of robbery and theft can cause sentient beings to fall into the hells and the hungry ghosts to undergo suffering. If born among animals, they take the forms of oxen, horses, donkeys, mules, camels, and the like, repaying their past debts with their physical strength, blood, and flesh. If born among humans, they become servants and slaves to others, their clothes failing to cover their bodies, their food insufficient to sustain their lives, impoverished and destitute, with scarcely any human dignity remaining.' Since robbery and theft have such bitter retributions, therefore, we disciples today, with utmost sincerity, bow our heads and take refuge in the Buddhas:
