The Buddha told the bhikṣu Upamana: "Bhikṣu! Suppose there were worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, filled with fine dust motes from the water boundary below up to the summit of existence above. Bhikṣu, suppose someone took that many dust motes, passed beyond worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and deposited one dust mote; and passed beyond worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges like this and deposited another dust mote; and completely deposited all those dust motes in this manner. Bhikṣu! What do you think? Whether [considering the worlds] where a dust mote was deposited or where no dust mote was deposited, could the number of all those dust motes be known?"
