"Now, regarding those who commit sins: after their life ends, ox-headed hell wardens record their consciousnesses, and before King Yama their right and wrong are thoroughly investigated. At that time, all their adversaries and victims come to testify, each saying: 'You previously slaughtered my body, boiling, roasting, steaming, and grilling it.' Or they say: 'You previously stripped away all my wealth and treasures, separating me from my relatives; only today have I gained an opportunity against you!' In the face of this present testimony, how could they dare conceal anything? They can only willingly accept their portion of past misfortunes; just as the sūtras explain, within the hells no one is punished wrongfully.
