At the southern gate there were five thousand śramaṇas who cried out loudly: 'For what sin of ours have we come to enter into this place?' A horse-headed rākṣasa, holding a three-pronged iron fork in his hand, struck through their chests and pierced out through their backs, bringing them onto the iron bed. The bed caught fire, and smoke and flames came forth together to burn the sinful persons. There were also iron axes that chopped the sinful persons' hands, shattering them inch by inch. Day and night they endured myriad kinds of punishment, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it.
