18.9

"Namas to all such immeasurable and boundless great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the worlds of the ten directions.

18.10

"Reverently I pay homage to all the worthy and noble ones among the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

18.11

"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next I perform kṣamā.

18.12

"All of us together right now have tranquil bodies and minds, free of deceit and free of hindrances. This is precisely the time to give rise to good and extinguish evil. We should further each undertake four kinds of contemplative practice to serve as preliminary skillful means for extinguishing sins. What are the four? First, contemplating causes and conditions; second, contemplating karmic retributions; third, contemplating my own body; fourth, contemplating the Tathāgata's body.

18.13

"First, contemplating causes and conditions means knowing that these sins of mine rely upon ignorance and improper reflection; lacking the power of correct contemplation, I did not recognize their faults and remained far removed from good friends, the buddhas, and the bodhisattvas. Following after the paths of Māra, I walked along evil and perilous tracks, like a fish swallowing a hook unaware of its peril, like a silkworm spinning a cocoon tangling and binding itself, like a moth darting into a fire burning and consuming itself. Due to these causes and conditions, I have been unable to emerge on my own.

18.14

"Second, contemplating karmic retributions means that for all bad and unwholesome karma, its painful retributions through transmigration in the three times are endless. Sinking in the boundless great ocean of long night, one is devoured by the rākṣasas of the kleśas; future births and deaths are dark and without shore. Even if one's retribution were to be that of a wheel-turning sage king ruling the four continents, flying at will and equipped with the seven treasures, after life ends one cannot escape death and falling into the evil destinies. The retribution of the four formless [realms] is the most exalted in the tridhātu, yet when one's merit is exhausted, one returns to being a worm inside an ox's head. How much more so for all others who have no merit, who are furthermore indolent and do not diligently practice kṣamā! This is also like embracing a stone and sinking into an abyss: seeking emergence is truly difficult.

18.15

"Third, contemplating my own body means that although it possesses the nature of correct cause and spiritual awakening, it is covered and obscured by the dark thickets of the kleśas, and without the power of the revealing cause, it cannot become manifest. I must now give rise to a superior resolve to shatter the heavy hindrances of ignorance and inversion, sever and eradicate the false and painful causes of birth and death, reveal and manifest the Tathāgata's great, luminous, awakening wisdom, and establish the unexcelled, wondrous fruit of nirvāṇa.

18.16

"Fourth, contemplating the Tathāgata's body means that it is unconditioned, tranquil, and illuminating; it is free of the four propositions and cut off from the hundred negations; it is fully endowed with all virtues and eternally abides in serenity. Although as a skillful means he enters extinction, his compassionate rescue has never ceased for a single moment. Giving rise to such a mind may truly be called a fine ford for extinguishing sins and an essential practice for eliminating hindrances. Therefore, we disciples today whole-heartedly bow our heads and pay homage to the Buddhas.

18.17

"Namo Jinaghoṣa Buddha of the eastern direction; Namo Sumerūpama Buddha of the southern direction; Namo Mahāraśmipuṣpābhijña Buddha of the western direction; Namo Bodhiprabhāsa Buddha of the northern direction; Namo Padmapuṣpavikāsabalasaṃpanna Buddha of the south-eastern direction; Namo Cīvarasantuṣṭa Buddha of the south-western direction; Namo Pravrajyāpramodacārin Buddha of the north-western direction; Namo Ratnacchatrātikrāntaprabha Buddha of the north-eastern direction; Namo Dūragataghoṣayaśas Buddha of the nadir; Namo Anabhilāpyavijaya Buddha of the zenith.

18.18

"Namas to all the Triratna throughout empty space across the ten directions.

18.19

"We disciples, from anādikāla until the present day, have nurtured our kleśas so that they grow daily deeper, daily thicker, daily more profuse, and daily more flourishing, veiling the eye of wisdom so that it sees nothing; we have severed the various goods so that they cannot continue, raising hindrances; the affliction-hindrance of being unable to see the Buddhas, unable to hear the true Dharma, and unable to meet the noble Saṅgha; the affliction-hindrance of failing to perceive wholesome and unwholesome karmic actions across all past and future worlds; the affliction-hindrance of receiving noble retributions among humans and devas; the affliction-hindrance of taking birth in the dhyāna bliss of the form and formless realms; the affliction-hindrance of failing to attain unimpeded supernormal powers to soar, vanish, appear, and travel everywhere to the pure lands of the Buddhas of the ten directions to hear the Dharma.

18.20

"The affliction-hindrances in learning ānāpāna, counting the breath, and the contemplation of impurity; the affliction-hindrances in learning benevolence, compassion, joy, and equanimity and their causes and conditions; the affliction-hindrances in learning the meanings of the seven skillful means and three contemplations; the affliction-hindrances in learning the four stations of mindfulness, heat, summit, and patience; the affliction-hindrances in learning the supreme mundane dharmas of hearing, contemplation, and cultivation; the affliction-hindrances in learning the understanding of emptiness, equality, and the middle path; the affliction-hindrances in learning the eightfold noble path through manifesting marks; the affliction-hindrances in learning the seven limbs of awakening without manifesting marks; the affliction-hindrances in learning the contemplation of causes and conditions regarding the limbs of enlightenment.

18.21

"The affliction-hindrances in learning the eight liberations and nine emptinesses; the affliction-hindrances in learning the ten knowledges and samādhis; the affliction-hindrances in learning the three masteries, six supernormal powers, and four unhindered knowledges; the affliction-hindrances in learning the six pāramitās and four immeasurables; the affliction-hindrances in learning the four means of embracing to broadly transform [beings]; the affliction-hindrances in learning the Mahāyāna mind and four great vows; the affliction-hindrances in learning the ten illuminations and ten practices; the affliction-hindrances in learning the ten transfers of merit and ten vows.

18.22

"The affliction-hindrances of clear understanding in the first bhūmi, second bhūmi, third bhūmi, and fourth bhūmi; the affliction-hindrances of various knowledges and views in the fifth bhūmi, sixth bhūmi, and seventh bhūmi; the affliction-hindrances in learning dual illumination in the eighth bhūmi, ninth bhūmi, and tenth bhūmi; and thus even up to the superior affliction-hindrances that hinder the learning of the Buddha fruit and the millions of asaṃkhyeyas of practices—such hindrances to practice are boundless and infinite. We disciples today with utmost sincerity and fervent supplication turn to the Buddhas, the honored Dharma, and the noble Saṅgha of the ten directions, feeling shame and confessing with kṣamā, wishing that they may all be eradicated.

18.23

"May it be that by relying on this kṣamā, all affliction-hindrances that obstruct all practices will be eliminated forever without remainder. May we disciples in every place receive birth at will, unswayed by binding karma; through supernormal power as we wish, may we travel everywhere across the ten directions in a single instant, purifying the Buddha lands and gathering and transforming sentient beings; in the profound realms of all dhyānas and all knowledges and views, may we be unimpeded; may our minds be able to encompass all dharmas, delighting in explaining them without end yet without clinging or defilement; may we attain mastery of mind, mastery of dharmas, mastery of wisdom, and mastery of skillful means; and may these kleśas and habits of ignorance be severed forever, never to continue again, so that the undefiled noble path shines brightly like the sun."

Mahāyāna Puṇḍarīka Sūtra on Baoda's Inquiries on the Retributions of Śramaṇas

18.25

A short while before, Baoda entered a Hell of Raining Fire. What is called the Hell of Raining Fire? That hell is eight thousand yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed all around by iron walls, with blazing fires flaring up together. Below are iron blades with their edges pointing straight upward. From the four corners of that citadel winds arise and blow upon the citadel, causing the citadel's fire to flare furiously. At the four corners are copper dogs whose fangs stick out upward and whose mouths and eyes emit fire; they are swift as the wind. From the mouths of the copper dogs arise clouds, dense and oppressive; from their noses water shoots out like rain from the heavens, and within those drops flames arise together. From the air fire falls like chariot wheels; striking the bodies of the sinners, their entire bodies catch fire and burn. Through a single day and night they endure immeasurable punishments, dying a thousand times and being born a thousand times, dying ten thousand times and being born ten thousand times.

18.26

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, "What deeds did these śramaṇas commit to suffer such torment?"

18.27

"The horse-headed rākṣasa replied, 'These śramaṇas received the pure precepts of the Buddha but did not guard their deportment. Although they possessed kāṣāyas, they refused to wear them, entering villages and towns with bare and exposed bodies, just like dried withered trees devoid of luster. If they were on Buddha grounds or saṅgha grounds, it was also like this. The devas called out: "Mad thief bhikṣus have entered the people's villages!" Due to these causes and conditions, they have fallen into this hell. Emerging from this hell, they will constantly become animals throughout thousands of myriads of kalpas.'"

18.28

When Baoda heard this, he wept sorrowfully and departed.
