"Second, contemplating karmic retributions means that for all bad and unwholesome karma, its painful retributions through transmigration in the three times are endless. Sinking in the boundless great ocean of long night, one is devoured by the rākṣasas of the kleśas; future births and deaths are dark and without shore. Even if one's retribution were to be that of a wheel-turning sage king ruling the four continents, flying at will and equipped with the seven treasures, after life ends one cannot escape death and falling into the evil destinies. The retribution of the four formless [realms] is the most exalted in the tridhātu, yet when one's merit is exhausted, one returns to being a worm inside an ox's head. How much more so for all others who have no merit, who are furthermore indolent and do not diligently practice kṣamā! This is also like embracing a stone and sinking into an abyss: seeking emergence is truly difficult.
