"Now, when discussing repentance: fundamentally it is reforming past deeds and cultivating the future, extinguishing evil and giving rise to good. When one is born and abides in the world, who can be without fault? Those still in training, when losing mindfulness, even give rise to defilements; arhats, through residual habitual latencies, set in motion karmas of body and speech—how much more so ordinary beings: how could they be without fault? Yet the wise awaken beforehand and are able to reform and repent, whereas the foolish conceal them and thus allow them to proliferate; hence habits accumulate through the long night of saṃsāra, with no time of awakening. If one can feel shame, disclose [faults], and repent, how could it be merely the eradication of sins? It also increases immeasurable merits and establishes the sublime fruit of the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa."
