The rākṣasa replied, 'These śramaṇas received the Buddha's prohibitory precepts, yet they took no care for the future but only grasped at the present. Violating the pure precepts, they intentionally committed evil karma, accumulated impure possessions, rode in carts, mounted horses, drove donkeys, and engaged in trade. Lacking kindness and compassion in their hearts and failing to guard their majestic deportment, they received the faithful offerings of others. Due to these evil causes and conditions, they have fallen into this hell for hundreds of thousands of myriads of kalpas. Even if they obtain human rebirth, their physical bodies will be incomplete: they will be deaf, blind, mute, and dumb, unable to see the Triratna and unable to hear the true Dharma.'
