27.2

"Next, pay homage to the wheel of the Dharma, the great canon of the twelvefold scriptures.

27.3

"Pay homage respectfully to all the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas in the ten directions.

27.4

"Namas to all such immeasurable and boundless great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the worlds in the ten directions.

27.5

"Pay homage respectfully to all the worthy and noble ones among the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

27.6

"Namas to all such immeasurable and boundless pratyekabuddhas.

27.7

"Having paid homage to the triratna, next perform kṣamā.

27.8

"We disciples! Having already completed our kṣamā for the retributions of hell, we should now next perform kṣamā for the retributions of the three evil destinies. In the sūtra the Buddha taught: 'Those with many desires seek much gain, and therefore their suffering and distress are also great. A contented person, though lying on the ground, still finds joy; a discontented person, though dwelling in a heavenly palace, is still unsatisfied.' Yet worldly people, when suddenly faced with urgent danger, can abandon their wealth without counting how much, but they do not know that this very body stands upon the brink of the deep pit of the three wretched paths, and if a single breath does not return, they will surely fall. When a good spiritual friend suddenly teaches them to cultivate merit and virtues, directing them to practice the provisions of wholesome dharmas for the future, they cling to this miserly mind and refuse to act reasonably. Those who are like this are utterly foolish and deluded. Why is this so? In the sūtra the Buddha taught: 'At birth one does not bring a single coin, and at death one does not carry away a single coin. Vainly toiling one's body to accumulate wealth only brings distress and worry; it is of no benefit to oneself and vainly falls to others. With no good deeds to rely on and no virtue to depend upon, it brings about death and rebirth into the evil destinies.' Therefore, we disciples, today with utmost sincere mind bow our heads, and with fervent, genuine sincerity take refuge in the Buddha.

27.9

"Namo Gaoguangming ('Lofty Radiance') Buddha of the eastern direction; namo Lianhuazui ('Supreme Lotus') Buddha of the southern direction; namo Dabeiguangmingwang ('Great Compassion Radiance King') Buddha of the western direction; namo Huashancang ('Flower Mountain Treasury') Buddha of the northern direction; namo Foyinsheng ('Buddha Sound') Buddha of the south-eastern direction; namo Youdanbahuazhuang ('Udumbara Flower Banner') Buddha of the south-western direction; namo Zhuanjixiang ('Turning Auspiciousness') Buddha of the north-western direction; namo Guangjingzhaoyao ('Pure Light Illumination') Buddha of the north-eastern direction; namo Wutuimo ('Without Regression or Fall') Buddha of the nadir; namo Baodebu ('Precious Virtue Stride') Buddha of the zenith.

27.10

"Namas to all such triratna throughout the realms of space in the ten directions.

27.11

"We disciples, today next perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution of being devoid of understanding in the destiny of animals; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of animals of bearing heavy burdens and pulling plows to repay past debts; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of animals of having no self-mastery and being chopped, stabbed, butchered, and slaughtered by others; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of animals of having no feet, two feet, four feet, or many feet; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of animals of having the interiors of one's fur, feathers, and scales gnawed and devoured by tiny insects. We perform kṣamā for all such immeasurable and boundless sinful retributions in the destiny of animals; today with utmost sincerity we namas and perform kṣamā.

27.12

"We disciples, today next perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution of perpetual starvation in the destiny of hungry ghosts; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of hungry ghosts of never having heard the name of water or drink for hundreds of thousands of myriad years; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of hungry ghosts of eating pus, blood, feces, and filth; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of hungry ghosts of having all one's limbs and joints blaze with fire whenever moving the body; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of hungry ghosts of having a belly that is huge and a throat that is tiny. We perform kṣamā for all such immeasurable and boundless painful retributions in the destiny of hungry ghosts; therefore, today with utmost sincerity we bow our heads, namas, and perform kṣamā.

27.13

"We disciples, today next perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution of flattery, deceit, and false pretenses in the destiny of all spirits and asuras; we perform kṣamā for the sinful retribution in the destiny of spirits of carrying sand and shouldering stones to fill rivers and dam up oceans; we perform kṣamā for the ugly sinful retribution in the destiny of rākṣasas, kumbhāṇḍas, and all evil spirits of devouring raw flesh and blood. We perform kṣamā for all such immeasurable and boundless sinful retributions in the destiny of spirits; today bowing our heads toward the Buddhas and great-earth bodhisattvas in the ten directions, we plead for mercy and perform kṣamā, so that they may all be extinguished.

27.14

"May we disciples, by means of the merit produced through this kṣamā for the retributions of animals and others, vow that in lifetime after lifetime we will eradicate the defilement of foolishness, know our own karmic conditions, illuminate clearly with wisdom, and cut off bodies in the evil destinies. We vow that by the merit produced through this kṣamā for the retributions of hungry ghosts and others, we will in lifetime after lifetime forever leave behind the suffering of stinginess, greed, hunger, and thirst, and constantly feed on the taste of the nectar of liberation. We vow that by the merit produced through this kṣamā for the retributions of spirits, asuras, and others, we will in lifetime after lifetime be upright and without flattery, leave behind the causes of wrong livelihood, eliminate the fruits of ugliness, and bring benefit and blessing to humans and devas. We vow that we disciples, from this day forth until reaching the site of awakening, shall definitely not receive retributions in the four evil destinies, except solely through great compassion for the sake of sentient beings, abiding in them without weariness by the power of our vows."

Mahāyāna Lotus Sūtra on the Questions and Answers of Baoda regarding the Retributions of Śramaṇas

27.16

Baoda walked a short distance forward and entered yet another hell of collapsing and burying. What is called the Hell of Collapsing and Burying? That hell is forty-nine yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed all around by iron walls. At the four corners of the iron walls there are vajra mountains. When a mighty wind blows, the mountains come together and crush [sinners] to fine powder, like scattered sand without any gap. Fire emerges from within the mountains, blazing fiercely and spreading throughout the hell without any rest. Iron lances fly chaotically to stab the sinners, and the lances all blaze with fire.

27.17

At that time, at the northern gate there were three thousand sinners who wailed loudly and cast their bodies to the ground, [crying:] 'What crime have we now committed to enter herein?' A horse-headed rākṣasa held an iron club in his hand, aimed at their heads, and struck them, driving them into the hell. In the center of that hell there were four great iron dogs, one yojana high, opening their mouths wide, with fire burning inside their mouths. When the sinners drew near, [the dogs] roared with fury. When the crowd of sinners heard this roaring, they were immediately terrified, fell unconscious, and collapsed to the ground for a long time. Blown by hot winds and cut by sharp knives, their bodies were ripped apart with excruciating, unbearable pain, and they fled toward the various corners. The vajra iron mountains spontaneously moved, collapsing and crushing the sinners, whose bodies were instantly crushed and destroyed. The hell-warden yakṣas stamped them against the ground and impaled them with large iron spits, calling out 'Live!', whereupon they spontaneously revived. Such afflictions and agonizing pain were of ten thousand kinds; in a single day and night they endured immeasurable punishment, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it.

27.18

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa: 'Due to what sins have these sinners come and entered this hell?'

27.19

The horse-headed rākṣasa replied to Bodhisattva Baoda: 'These people could not restrain their minds and practice ascetic deeds to seek fields of merit; on the contrary, they relied on powerful clans and leaned on official authority, manipulating the worthy and oppressing the poor and lowly. Or they wrongfully seized others' wealth and treasures, or deceitfully usurped the livelihoods and estates of other households, without shame or remorse in their minds. Due to these causes and conditions, they have fallen into hell, without any time of emergence for hundreds and thousands of births. Later, if they manage to get out, they will be born into base and lowly stations in borderlands, unable to hear the Buddha's true Dharma.'

27.20

Having heard this, Baoda wept and departed.
