27.17
At that time, at the northern gate there were three thousand sinners who wailed loudly and cast their bodies to the ground, [crying:] 'What crime have we now committed to enter herein?' A horse-headed rākṣasa held an iron club in his hand, aimed at their heads, and struck them, driving them into the hell. In the center of that hell there were four great iron dogs, one yojana high, opening their mouths wide, with fire burning inside their mouths. When the sinners drew near, [the dogs] roared with fury. When the crowd of sinners heard this roaring, they were immediately terrified, fell unconscious, and collapsed to the ground for a long time. Blown by hot winds and cut by sharp knives, their bodies were ripped apart with excruciating, unbearable pain, and they fled toward the various corners. The vajra iron mountains spontaneously moved, collapsing and crushing the sinners, whose bodies were instantly crushed and destroyed. The hell-warden yakṣas stamped them against the ground and impaled them with large iron spits, calling out 'Live!', whereupon they spontaneously revived. Such afflictions and agonizing pain were of ten thousand kinds; in a single day and night they endured immeasurable punishment, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it.
