29.1

At that time, Joyous King Bodhisattva addressed the Buddha, saying: "Bhagavat! In this assembly now, are there any bodhisattva-mahāsattvas who have attained this samādhi, and have also attained the eighty-four thousand pāramitā gateways, the gateways of all samādhis, and dhāraṇī gateways?"

29.2

The Buddha said to Joyous King: "In this assembly now, there are bodhisattva-mahāsattvas who have attained this samādhi, and are also able to enter the eighty-four thousand pāramitās as well as all the gateways of samādhis and dhāraṇīs. All these bodhisattvas, in this bhadrakalpa, shall all attain anuttarā samyaksambodhiḥ—excepting the four Tathāgatas who have already attained buddhahood in this kalpa."

29.3

Joyous King Bodhisattva again addressed the Buddha, saying: "May you bestow compassion and proclaim the names of all these bodhisattvas, so as to greatly benefit and bring tranquility to the world, to profit devas and humans, to protect the Buddha's Dharma and cause it to abide long, and to reveal the Dharma gateways for future bodhisattvas, so that their minds seeking the unsurpassed path will not tire or slacken."

29.4

The Buddha said to Joyous King: "Listen attentively now! Reflect upon it well! I shall speak it for you."

29.5

"Yes, Bhagavat! We joyfully wish to hear."

29.6

At that time, the Bhagavat then spoke the names of the Buddhas in verse:

29.8

"Next, pay homage to the great treasury Dharma wheel of the twelve divisions of scriptures.

29.9

"Pay homage with reverent respect to all the great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the ten directions.

29.10

"Namas to all such measureless and boundless great bodhisattva-mahāsattvas of the worlds of the ten directions.

29.11

"Pay homage with reverent respect to all the noble ones: the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

29.12

"Namas to all such measureless and boundless pratyekabuddhas.

29.13

"Having paid homage to the triratna, next perform kṣamā.

29.14

"We disciples respectfully request the Buddhas of the ten directions, the twelve divisions of scriptures, all noble ones, the devas, nāgas, and the rest of the eight classes, the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, and the present great assembly to bear witness. We disciples, from anādikāla onward, have committed measureless and boundless manifold sins. Today, with the utmost sincerity, we reveal and repent them, taking refuge in the Buddha.

29.15

"Namo Zuojiewang Buddha of the east; namo Zuiyongyue Buddha of the south; namo Wu'aicheng Buddha of the west; namo Longhuade Buddha of the north; namo Wubianzizaili Buddha of the southeast; namo Zhenbaozizai Buddha of the southwest; namo Lianhuazizai Buddha of the northwest; namo Milouqianna Buddha of the northeast; namo Jianlijingjin Buddha of the nadir; namo Liuliguangzuifeng Buddha of the zenith.

29.16

"Namas to all such triratnas of the ten directions exhaustively throughout the space of the cosmos.

29.17

"We disciples, from anādikāla kalpas onward up to this present life, have killed and harmed all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; have stolen the property of all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; have aroused wrong and lustful thoughts toward all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; have used false speech to deceive all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; have used frivolous speech to tease and ridicule all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; have used harsh speech to scold, insult, slander, and revile all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; have used divisive speech to foment discord and ruin all the triratna, teachers, monks, parents, six relations and kin, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu in unknowable numbers; or have broken the five precepts, the eight precepts, the ten precepts, the ten good precepts, the two hundred and fifty precepts, the five hundred precepts, the three collections of bodhisattva precepts, the ten inexhaustible precepts, and up to all precepts and all rules of deportment, whether committing them ourselves, teaching others to do so, or rejoicing when seeing them done, in unknowable numbers.

29.18

"All such manifold sins are as countless as the boundless dust motes of the great earths of the ten directions; our sins committed are likewise boundless and countless. Space being boundless, our sins committed are also boundless. Expedient means being boundless, our sins committed are also boundless. Dharmatā being boundless, our sins committed are also boundless. The dharmadhātu being boundless, our sins committed are also boundless. Sentient beings being boundless, our robbing and killing of them is also boundless. The triratna being boundless, our violations and damage to it are also boundless. The categories of precepts being boundless, our infractions are also boundless. Such sins are beyond what can be known, above by all the bodhisattvas, and down to the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; only a Buddha together with a Buddha can know the extent of my sins. Now, before the triratna and before the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, I reveal and repent them, not daring to conceal them. We pray only that the triratna of the ten directions and the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu will hear our kṣamā.

29.19

"Because of the manifold evils we disciples have possessed from anādikāla kalpas onward, by these causes and conditions we produce great sorrow and suffering, poverty and deprivation, grief, torment, panic, and fear; our minds are constantly cowed and wretched out of terror of evil karma, and nowhere and at no time do we find even temporary joy. May the greatly compassionate Bhagavats present in the ten directions, who can remove all fears of sentient beings, receive our sincere kṣamā. For all past evils we now repent; the actions we are presently committing we sincerely reveal. What has not yet been done, we dare never do again; the karma that has been done, we dare not conceal. The three kinds of bodily karma, the four of vocal karma, and the actions of the three mental karmas we now repent completely. The perilous difficulties of birth and death, the various difficulties of lust, folly, and kleśas—all such difficulties we now repent completely. The difficulty of mental flightiness, the difficulty of associating with bad companions, the perilous difficulties of the three states of existence, and the difficulties of the three poisons; the difficulty of encountering the state of no hardship, the difficulty of meeting a favorable time, the difficulty of cultivating merit, and the difficulty of also meeting a Buddha—all such difficulties we now repent completely.

29.20

"We disciples now, for the sake of all sentient beings as well as for ourselves, take refuge and perform kṣamā before the Buddhas of the ten directions. For immeasurable kalpas, all sentient beings have failed to recognize the kindness of the Buddhas and of their parents, have failed to understand wholesome dharmas, and have committed manifold evils; conceiving arrogance based on lineage and wealth, in the bloom of youth they have indulged in heedlessness and committed evil deeds; with unwholesome thoughts in mind and evil karma produced by mouth, they have acted according to their whims and failed to see their faults. Blinded by the ignorance of ordinary fools' conduct, they have associated with bad companions so that kleśas perturbed their minds; through the conditions of the five desires, anger arose in their minds; not knowing satisfaction, they therefore committed manifold evils. Associating with the unvirtuous, jealousy and stinginess arose accordingly; through the condition of poverty, they engaged in deceit, flattery, and evil; being bound to others and constantly fearful, not being masters of themselves, they committed various evils; greed, anger, and delusion agitated their minds; driven by craving, they committed various evils; relying on food, clothing, and female beauty, with all the knots of defilement burning hot, they conceived attachment to other men with tainted minds; or regarding horses, oxen, donkeys, mules, sheep, and all kinds of beasts and birds of various kinds, they conceived notions of women; failing to rely on the Buddha's conduct, they committed various evils. All the measureless and boundless manifold sins accumulated through the three karmas of body, speech, and mind, we now completely repent.

29.21

"We disciples, from anādikāla onward up to this day, may have failed to revere the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Noble Saṅgha; all such manifold sins we now completely repent. Or we may have failed to revere the pratyekabuddhas and bodhisattvas; all such manifold sins we now completely repent. Through lack of wisdom we slandered the True Dharma, failed to revere our parents and elders, were covered by foolish delusion, arrogant, and heedless, and through greed, anger, and delusion committed manifold evils; all such manifold sins we now completely repent. Being fond of drinking alcohol and not knowing moderation, or giving alcohol to the Saṅgha, to precept-holders, to bhikṣuṇīs, to those who have stilled their minds, or to those who practice meditation—such measureless and boundless sins, we today direct our minds to take refuge and repent.

29.22

"We pray that we disciples, by relying on the merit generated by this kṣamā, will in life after life forever discard the form of the womb, be reborn in accordance with our wishes, obtain the power of the six abhijñās, and rescue and gather all suffering beings. Until space and the dharmadhātu are exhausted, my vows shall also be so: may all sentient beings in the hells and hungry ghosts, those in poverty and distress, and those oppressed by the sufferings of existence and kleśas—may all such sufferings be completely eradicated. We also pray that we disciples, by relying on the merit accomplished through this kṣamā, will be freed from birth and death, reach the shore of great wisdom, turn the supreme wheel that is wondrous and pure, and have all our prayers and wishes fulfilled. We also pray that the blind may see, the deaf may hear, the mute may speak, the naked may obtain clothing, and the poor and destitute may obtain treasures, with granaries overflowing and lacking nothing, all receiving security and joy, so that not even a single person suffers. We also pray that sentient beings will turn to one another with benevolent minds and regard each other with the eye of the Buddha, with dignified and handsome appearance that delights others to see, their bodies adorned with supreme and wondrous forms, becoming companions of bodhi and acting as true spiritual friends."

Mahāyāna Padma-Baoda Sūtra on the Inquiries and Answers concerning Retribution of Śramaṇas

29.24

Shortly thereafter, Baoda entered a Flying Fire Wailing Severed Heads Hell. That hell was sixty yojanas in length and breadth, surrounded on all sides by iron walls and covered above with an iron net. Within it, iron pikes and shears were sharp as blades, and fierce winds blew fires whose blazing flames flared brilliantly to burn the sinners.

29.25

At that time, in the eastern gate, there were thirty-six thousand sinners crying out these words: 'What sin of ours has brought us to enter this place?' Horse-headed rākṣasas held iron clubs in their hands and struck toward their backs. When the sinners stepped forward, [the rākṣasas] kicked them with their feet; the sinners staggered and fell at every step, while the iron pikes below impaled them, and flying fires incinerated them, burning out from their eyes or issuing from their mouths. The sinners wailed and ran east and west; just as they wanted to run east, flying fires blew against them and burned them, and when they wanted to dash west, fires returned to burn their faces. The horse-headed rākṣasas seized the sinners' hair with their hands and pulled with both hands, so that their skin and hair were completely stripped off and their bodies and bones were crushed. Hungry dogs came to eat their flesh, and hungry ghosts came to drink their blood. Throughout a day and a night they suffered ten thousand kinds of torment, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it; through thousands of myriads of kalpas they could not finish receiving their retribution, and if later they could exit, they would constantly be animals.

29.26

Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasas, 'By what sins have all these people been brought to enter this place?'

29.27

The horse-headed rākṣasas replied, 'These sinners received the Buddha's prohibitions and precepts but did not maintain them; they plucked the fur and feathers of beasts and birds, injuring all kinds of creatures without ever a thought of kindness. Those who were captured had their spirits fly and their souls flee in panic, their piercing agony intolerable, their bitter pain unbearable. Yet these people painfully plucked their fur and feathers, taking it for sport and pleasure, utterly without compassion or shame. Because of this sin, they fell into this hell.'

29.28

Hearing this, the Bodhisattva Baoda wept in sorrow and departed.
