29.25

At that time, in the eastern gate, there were thirty-six thousand sinners crying out these words: 'What sin of ours has brought us to enter this place?' Horse-headed rākṣasas held iron clubs in their hands and struck toward their backs. When the sinners stepped forward, [the rākṣasas] kicked them with their feet; the sinners staggered and fell at every step, while the iron pikes below impaled them, and flying fires incinerated them, burning out from their eyes or issuing from their mouths. The sinners wailed and ran east and west; just as they wanted to run east, flying fires blew against them and burned them, and when they wanted to dash west, fires returned to burn their faces. The horse-headed rākṣasas seized the sinners' hair with their hands and pulled with both hands, so that their skin and hair were completely stripped off and their bodies and bones were crushed. Hungry dogs came to eat their flesh, and hungry ghosts came to drink their blood. Throughout a day and a night they suffered ten thousand kinds of torment, seeking life but unable to attain it, seeking death but unable to attain it; through thousands of myriads of kalpas they could not finish receiving their retribution, and if later they could exit, they would constantly be animals.
