The Buddha said: "In previous lives, they indulged in drinking wine until drunk and disordered, committing the thirty-six errors; later they obtained a foolish body like that of a drunkard, unable to distinguish the noble from the base—it was for these offences that they incurred this punishment. Those who liked bows, knives, and horse-riding become barbarian tribesmen; those who liked killing and hunting become jackals and wolves; those who liked wearing flowers while entering a monastery later become horned beetles; those who liked wearing long skirts later become long-tailed insects; those fond of abusive speech later become dogs; those who slandered and stabbed people with harsh words and had much anger later become vipers and serpents; those fond of harsh sounds later become kites and owls; those fond of speech that causes calamity later become wild foxes."
