1.21

'Furthermore, from beginningless time, we have induced abortions, broken eggs, used poisons and witchcraft to injure and kill sentient beings; tilled the soil, dug the earth, cultivated fields and orchards, raised silkworms and boiled cocoons, harming and killing exceedingly; or struck and swatted mosquitoes and horseflies, crushed fleas and lice; or burned away refuse and sweepings, opened and cleared ditches, wrongfully harming all; or eaten fruits; or wrongfully killed sentient beings by using grains, rice, water, or vegetables; or burned firewood, or exposed open flames and candles, burning various types of insects; or consumed sauces and vinegar without checking for movement; or poured out boiling water, scalding insects and ants to death. In such ways, throughout our four postures of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, we have constantly harmed and killed minute sentient beings flying in the air and clinging to the earth. We disciples, with the darkness of worldly minds, were unconscious and unaware, and today, with utmost sincerity, we confess and repent of them all.
