Namo to all Buddhas throughout the past, present, and future, the ten directions and three periods of time, exhausting the entire realm of empty space. Taking refuge and making confession and repentance: 'With sincere hearts we make confession and repentance! Next, we confess and repent of the offenses of theft. As it is said in the sūtras: "If an article belongs to another and is guarded by another, among such things, one should not take even a single blade of grass or a single leaf without it being given, much less commit theft." Yet sentient beings, seeing only present gain, take things through various improper means, causing future reception of these calamities. Therefore, the sūtras state: "The offense of theft causes sentient beings to fall into hell and hungry ghosts to endure suffering; if born among animals, they take the forms of oxen, horses, donkeys, mules, camels, and the like, repaying past debts with their physical labor, flesh, and blood; if born among humans, they become servants and slaves to others, with clothing insufficient to cover their bodies, food insufficient to sustain their lives, impoverished and afflicted, with human decencies almost entirely ruined." Since theft incurs such bitter retributions, we disciples today, with utmost sincerity, take refuge in all Buddhas.'
