The Venerable Ānanda, who distinguished the seven qualities—knowing the Dharma, understanding the meaning, knowing the right time, understanding moderation, being articulate in the matters of assemblies, examining himself, and discerning the faculties of people—immediately rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, knelt down, and asked the Buddha: “For what reason did the Buddha smile? May you please explain its meaning.”
