"In this manner, one first eliminates coarse thoughts, and afterwards eliminates subtle thoughts; when the mind arises in purity, one attains the right path, all kleśas are exhausted, and from this one attains the place of security—this is called the fruit of leaving the household life. The mind attains mastery, the three karmas become supremely pure, one never again takes birth in a womb, and one recites various sūtras and attains broad learning—at this time one attains the resultant reward. When this is attained, not in vain has one crushed the armies of the Māra king, and one attains the foremost heroic renown. To be carried away by kleśas in the world is not called bravery; being able to crush the bandit of kleśas, extinguish the fire of the three poisons, abide in cool, delightful purity, rest securely with high pillows in the forest of nirvāṇa, with the pure breezes of the various dhyāna-samādhis, faculties, powers, and seven limbs of awakening blowing on all four sides, and looking back with compassion on sentient beings drowning in the sea of the three poisons—such marvelous virtue and strength alone is called bravery. For such scattered minds, one should be mindful of ānāpāna, training in the six methods to sever all discursive thoughts; it is for this reason that one is mindful of counting the breath."
